The end of the year marks a good time to reflect on the passed year and the achievements made by the team. 2018 was, in many ways, a landmark year for Wire.
From a product perspective we launched Wire Pro, our business product, in early 2018 and later added Wire Red, our unique crisis collaboration tool, to our product line. That in itself was a big milestone for us. We can now see business’ over five continents using our products.
The first question we asked ourselves was: are business ready to embrace moving from simple cloud systems to advanced end-to-end encryption? The answer to that question is an overwhelming yes. Helped along by privacy regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in California but also by a growing push to ensure privacy worldwide. This only got underpinned further by Tim Cook and Marc Benioff being advocates of regulation and privacy.
This helped us to grow from 0 to over 480 customers in the past 12 months. A lot of SMB business’ but also Fortune 1,000 companies including some of the world’s most renowned financial, high tech, educational, advisory and government institutions now use Wire Pro.
The feedback we received consistently showed us that cyber risk scenarios for large enterprises are only getting more complex. The damage of getting this wrong was seen with NotPetya, where the costs were in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
It's obvious to us that enterprises are looking for cutting-edge, secure and user-friendly solutions. We're very proud to have delivered two world firsts: Guest rooms, a secure extension of Wire Pro into a browser based conference call platform, and the first end-to-end encrypted video conferencing service. This has been part of our commitment to deliver not only what is expected but to push boundaries on what is possible.
Our accomplishments have been recognized by the likes of Forrester, Gartner and IDC. Being mentioned alongside Slack, Google, Microsoft and IBM in our first year is a massive accolade for what we have produced.
On top of all, Wire is also a founding member of Message Layer Security (MLS), a working group at IETF, which is set to create an open standard for application developers to write inherently secure applications in the future. As members of our team worked towards what is now WebRTC, we know what a widespread and lasting impact the right standardization can have. Wire is committed to drive and contribute to the efforts of making communication more secure – today and far into the future.
The future for Wire looks promising: the right market dynamics, a focus on security, amazing products and customers that daily drive us to be better.
We say thank you for an amazing 2018 and welcome 2019 with open arms.
