Wire x Apple Indigo - Strategic Partnership in Secure Communication

Written by Oliver Brown | 03.04.2025

As the digital landscape becomes more dynamic, distributed, and data-driven, the stakes for secure, resilient communication ecosystems have never been higher, especially in defense, government, and other high-assurance sectors. In this context, we’re proud to announce Wire as a strategic partner in the Apple Indigo initiative, marking a significant step forward in building the most trusted and integrated secure communication environment available on Apple platforms.

What is Apple Indigo?

Apple Indigo is a focused initiative by Apple and its trusted technology partners to deliver fully integrated, secure mobile solutions that meet the strict demands of defense, intelligence, and regulated public sector environments.

Indigo stands for iOS Native Devices In Government Operation. This involves the native use of iPhones and iPads. The solution offers a hardened configuration of iOS or iPadOS, as well as associated infrastructure services. With indigo, you enjoy the best user experience without additional software or security solutions. This not only means cost savings but also ease of operation.

All iPhones running iOS 15.6.1 and higher and all iPad models running iPadOS 15.6.1 and higher are approved. iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 have also been approved. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) confirmed the security features of the iPad and iPhone in a press release . The goal is to provide a security solution for all users who have particularly high data protection requirements up to the "CLASSIFIED - OFFICIAL USE ONLY" (VS-NfD) classification level.

At its core, Indigo is about more than just technology; it's about trust, sovereignty, and operational readiness. It provides a validated ecosystem of hardened Apple devices, certified applications, secure infrastructure, and managed service offerings that enable secure mobile work, even in the most sensitive and classified contexts.

Why the Ecosystem Matters

Security today isn’t a feature, it’s a system. The strength of a secure solution lies not just in one app or device, but in how every layer works together seamlessly. This is where Indigo stands out.

The Indigo ecosystem includes:

  • Trusted app partners (like Wire) vetted for their encryption, compliance, and integration capabilities
  • Device-level protections and hardware-rooted security from iPhone to iPad to Vision Pro
  • Management and deployment platforms built for scalability, auditability, and policy enforcement
  • Operational readiness for both connected and disconnected environments

This tightly integrated approach ensures organizations aren’t stitching together siloed tools, but instead deploying a comprehensive, interoperable solution ready for real-world challenges.

Introducing Wire: Next-Gen Secure Collaboration

Wire, based in Europe and designed with privacy and transparency at its core, is an industry leader in secure messaging, voice, video, document management, and collaboration. With end-to-end encryption, based on the MLS protocol forward secrecy, and zero-trust design principles, Wire has become a go-to solution for organizations that demand secure digital conversations, without compromise!

By joining Apple Indigo, Wire strengthens the ecosystem in several critical ways:

  • Mission-aligned architecture: Built for environments where every message and call must be secure by design
  • Full data sovereignty and GDPR compliance: Ensuring sensitive communications stay within trusted jurisdictions
  • Advanced group collaboration: Secure file sharing, conferencing, and workflows in a mobile-first interface
  • Optimized for Apple hardware: Seamless integration across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro for trusted communication anywhere

Together, Wire and Indigo are setting a new standard for operationally secure, user-friendly communication in high-security domains from defense operations and crisis response to government agencies and critical infrastructure protection.
