Just over a year ago, Wire acquired Pydio, a French company known for its enterprise content management platform, Pydio Cells. The immediate impact of this acquisition was an expanded ability to help organizations strengthen data security, privacy, and sovereignty in their digital work platforms. Customers responded enthusiastically. In 2025, our business doubled on the back of accelerated uptake for both Wire Messenger and Pydio Cells.
But the vision for the acquisition went beyond an expanded portfolio; it was the foundation for building a new category: a secure-by-design digital workspace unifying messaging, conferencing, file management, and document collaboration. The purpose of this secure workspace is to enable all the digital productivity your users want, while ensuring the data privacy, protection, and control that your IT, cybersecurity, and compliance teams need.
With the release of Wire Drive, this vision is now a reality. Wire Drive brings secure file collaboration into Wire, a unified, privacy-first workspace designed for security-sensitive and regulated environments.
Wire Drive is a new, add-on Wire Messenger capability that adds centralized, secure file management and real-time document collaboration within Wire groups. When creating a group, you can enable Wire Drive to transform how files are shared, accessed, and collaborated on within that group.
In a Wire-Drive-enabled group, you’ll see a new tab called “Shared Drive,” which is a per-group centralized file hub. Message-shared files are automatically captured in the shared drive. You can organize files into folders and tag them for easy filtering and searching.
Unlike the awkward interactions between separate messaging and file management tools (even within the same suite), file permissions are frictionless because access control is based solely on group membership. No more waiting hours for someone to give you access to a file they thought they shared with you.
Access is controlled by group members themselves, with no default administrator override and no Wire platform access to group membership or permission settings. Wire Drive group membership also supports Wire’s enterprise SSO and SCIM capabilities.
You can make files in your group’s Wire Drive externally visible and downloadable via public share links, which can be password-protected and set to expire.
Not only can you view and organize files within your group, but you can also edit and collaborate in real-time using our Collabora integration. Enable version-controlled editing with change tracking and file recovery—built for audit-ready collaboration.
Finally, you can see all your files across all your groups in a single place, clearly marked and tagged for easy management.
All Wire communications (messages, calls, conferences) are always end-to-end encrypted leveraging the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, the IETF’s next-generation key exchange standard for E2EE. Nothing has changed in this respect.
