At Wire, encryption is more than a feature, it’s a fundamental right. We are proud to announce that Wire has joined the Global Encryption Coalition, a worldwide alliance of civil society organizations, tech companies, and security experts advocating for the protection and promotion of strong encryption. 

What Is the Global Encryption Coalition?

The Global Encryption Coalition (GEC) is an international alliance of over 300 organizations working to:

• Defend the right to use strong encryption,
• Promote policies that protect privacy and security,
• Educate stakeholders on the risks of weakening encryption.

Founded by the Internet Society, Center for Democracy & Technology, and Global Partners Digital, the GEC brings together voices from across sectors to send a clear message: Strong encryption is essential and non-negotiable.

Why Encryption Matters

Encryption is the foundation of modern digital security. It protects everything from confidential business communications to sensitive personal data, online banking, government intelligence, and health records. It ensures that our messages remain private, our transactions secure, and our systems resilient against cyber threats.

Without strong encryption:

• Journalists and activists face increased surveillance and censorship
• Enterprises risk data breaches and industrial espionage
• Governments lose secure channels for critical operations
• Everyday users are left vulnerable to identity theft and fraud

Strong encryption safeguards trust, transparency, and safety in the digital age.

The Threats We Face

Despite its essential role, encryption is under threat. Around the world, there’s a growing trend of proposals to undermine encryption by:

• Introducing backdoors in encrypted services for law enforcement
• Mandating client-side scanning of private communications
• Forcing companies to weaken security features in the name of national security or crime prevention

These measures, while often well-intentioned, create systemic vulnerabilities that compromise the privacy of everyone - not just bad actors. Weakening encryption doesn’t make us safer. It makes everyone more exposed.
