Telegram vs. Wire

Do your employees turn to Telegram as shadow IT? It's fast, familiar, and outside IT's control. Here's how it really compares to Wire on features, security architecture, and digital sovereignty.

The Shadow Collaboration Challenge

Employees want to get work done easily

Employees don't choose consumer messaging apps like Telegram because they want to bypass security. They choose them because they're familiar and make external collaboration easy. Wire's research* shows the problem isn't a lack of security policies. It's the gap between what organizations approve and how people actually work.

Summary

Wire vs. Telegram, Which One Is Better?

Telegram is used widely for personal messaging (and also as a shadow IT tool within some organizations). The lack of complete encryption and built-in metadata collection raises questions about its viability within security-conscious and regulated environments.

Wire is built exactly for such organizations and use cases.

  • End-to-end encryption by default, always on, with no admin override.
  • Built on a zero-trust and zero-knowledge framework.
  • Trusted by governments, defense, and enterprise orgs.

Telegram Alternative FAQ

How secure is Telegram compared to other messaging apps?

Telegram uses MTProto 2.0 protocol and offers two encryption models. Standard Cloud Chats use client-server encryption, while Secret Chats provide end-to-end encryption (E2EE) between participating devices.

Unlike Wire, E2EE is not enabled by default for Telegram conversations. Secret Chats are also device-specific and do not synchronize through Telegram's cloud.

For organizations requiring E2EE by default, including secure groups, files, and collaboration, Wire provides a stronger privacy-focused architecture designed specifically for professional use.

Does Telegram support external collaboration?

Telegram provides extensive tools for external communication, including large groups, public channels, usernames, invite links, bots, and Mini Apps. It is particularly strong for reaching large public communities.

However, Telegram does not provide enterprise-focused features such as managed guest access, private deployment, or secure federation between organizations.

Businesses requiring controlled external collaboration—with granular permissions, guest management, and E2EE—should consider Wire, which is designed specifically for secure professional collaboration.

Is Telegram really open source and how does that affect privacy?

Telegram is partially open source. Its client applications, APIs, and protocol documentation are publicly available, allowing researchers to inspect and verify much of the technology.

However, Telegram's server-side code is not open source. This means organizations cannot independently inspect or operate the complete Telegram server infrastructure.

By comparison, Wire provides open-source server components and supports private and on-premises deployments, giving organizations greater transparency and control over their communication infrastructure.

How does Telegram’s encryption protocol work?

Telegram uses MTProto 2.0, a proprietary encryption protocol designed specifically for Telegram. Standard Cloud Chats use client-server encryption, while Secret Chats establish encryption directly between participating devices using cryptographic key exchange.

Secret Chats provide E2EE and are designed so Telegram cannot decrypt their contents. However, they are limited to one-to-one conversations and do not provide Telegram's normal cloud synchronization.

For enterprises requiring E2EE by default across messaging and collaboration, Wire provides a different architecture where E2EE is fundamental to the platform rather than an optional Secret Chat feature.
