NIS2 Compliance: What You Need to Know in 2025

Discover how your organization can become NIS2 compliant with expert insights from Wire. Learn best practices for secure internal communication, business continuity, and crisis management.

Is your organization ready for the NIS2 Directive? If you haven’t aligned with its updated cybersecurity requirements, the answer is likely no. But don’t worry: this guide will help you get there.

With the introduction of the NIS2 Directive, organizations across industries, including those managing critical national infrastructure, are under increasing pressure to upgrade their security measures. It’s crucial that organizations take active steps toward compliance now to protect their operations and secure internal communications.

In this article, we’ll break down the NIS2 regulation, explain who it applies to, and offer practical strategies for achieving compliance plus how Wire helps you get there.

1. Understanding NIS2 and its impact

What is the NIS2 Directive?

The NIS2 Directive is a framework that strengthens the cybersecurity of essential and important entities in the EU. Its key requirements include:

  • Enhanced security measures: Organizations must implement robust encryption, stronger authentication protocols, and comprehensive incident response plans to minimize cyber risks.
  • Accountability & governance: Executives and decision-makers must be accountable for cybersecurity, ensuring that risks are addressed at the highest levels of corporate governance. Breaches may result in penalties for management, including liability and a potential temporary ban from management roles.
  • Rigorous reporting requirements: Ensuring timely and transparent incident reporting to mitigate risks effectively.

By understanding these elements, organizations can better align their internal practices with the expectations of NIS2.

Who does NIS2 apply to?

NIS2 applies to both essential and important sectors. The “essential” sectors, considered to be highly critical, are listed in Annex I and include energy, transport, banking, financial market infrastructure, healthcare, drinking water, wastewater, digital infrastructure, public administration, and space. Annex II sets out “important” sectors such as postal and courier services, waste management, chemical production and distribution, food production and processing, medical equipment manufacturing, and digital suppliers (search engines, social media, and online marketplaces).

Size Thresholds:

  • Large entities are organisations with a minimum of 250 employees or an annual turnover of €50 million or more and a balance sheet total of €43 million or more.
  • Medium entities are organisations with 50+ employees or an annual turnover and balance sheet total of €10 million or more.

2. NIS2 Requirements and Cybersecurity Challenges

The directive addresses today’s most urgent security challenges. To stay compliant and resilient, organizations must tackle the following:

  • Crisis Communication: During a cyberattack, organizations must maintain real-time, reliable communications. Crisis response is central to NIS2’s focus on operational resilience.
  • Business Continuity: NIS2 demands that organizations prepare for and recover from incidents without major service disruption. This means cyber incident response, redundancy, and coordination plans.
  • Secure Internal Communication: Remote and hybrid teams increase exposure to cyber risks. NIS2 mandates protection of sensitive internal information through end-to-end encryption and access controls.

Staying informed about these challenges and the strategies to overcome them is crucial for long‑term resilience.
